The themes in this story are many but the one that sticks out the most is the belief in superstition. For some, it’s an unshakeable fear. The latest victim took the legend to heart and died in “terror” upon seeing the hound on the moor. Sherlock Holmes takes the case and finds himself facing a clever foe who, to his surprise, gives him a bit of a bumpy start.
In this 128-page story, we have clever villainy, secrets and escaped convicts. The setting, atmosphere and landscape were wonderfully rendered. It was truly fantastic prose.
