An examination of the table of disputes and a review of the case studies in the preceding section of this chapter can serve as evidence of the degree of General Assembly involvement in the processes of pacific settlement of disputes. Almost 19 percent of all disputes submitted to the United Nations have been dealt with solely by the General Assembly. Another 23 percent have been considered by both the Security Council and the General Assembly. Thus, the General Assembly has been involved in nearly 42 percent of the disputes investigated by the United Nations. Among the six case studies presented in this chapter, the General Assembly exclusively handled the disposition of the Italian colonies and shared with the Security Council the responsibilities for dealing with two other problems race conflict in South Africa and the Western Sahara dispute.
