DFDs are probably the most widely used specification tool in industry today. They are the cornerstone of the software development methodology commonly referred to as “Structured Analysis” (Yourdon, 1989). Both DFDs and process mapping are used to represent information flow in the system (Gillies, 1997). Voice of the customer analysis and gap analysis are used to capture true customer requirements and expectations which are accentuated in the Six Sigma strategy (Breyfogle et al., 2001; Tayntor, 2002). The less commonly used tools/techniques include statistical process control, design of experiments, Taguchi methods, process capability analysis (PCA), COPQ analysis, etc.
One of the questions asked in the survey was to identify the stage in the SDLC that can be improved after implementing a process improvement methodology such as Six Sigma. It was clear that companies participated in the survey regarded the stage of requirement analysis as a high potential area to improve, followed by operation and maintenance and testing. The participants were also asked to rank the key attributes which are important in the software development process. The results are shown below:
