Anticipated vs. actual risk exposures
Before travel, 78 (64%) of travelers anticipated encountering at least one health risk activity during their travel (visiting rural areas, handling animals, contact with blood/ body fluids, visiting malarious areas) (Table 2). However, post-travel, 97 (80%) respondents reported at least one health risk activity during their travel. Fifty of the 122 travelers who completed pre-and post-travel surveys (41%) encountered at least one health risk that they had not anticipated prior to travel. Of the 57 respondents who reported that they did not plan to travel in rural areas during their upcoming travel, 13 (23%) reported after their return that they had traveled in rural areas (Table 2). Of the 91 respondents who reported that they did not plan to have contact with or handle animals during their upcoming travel, 7 (8%) reported after their return that they had come in contact with or handled animals. Of the 93 respondents who reported that they did not plan to have contact with blood or body fluids during their upcoming travel, 2 (2%) reported after their return that they had come in contact with blood or body fluids. Of the 36 travelers who anticipated no risk of malaria during their travel, 4 (11%) reported traveling to malarious areas. Of the 22 travelers who had not anticipated any risks prior to travel, 17 (77%) encountered health risks during travel (travel to malarious areas Z 15, travel to rural areas Z 5, handling animals Z 1).
