iaturization andeaseofuse.Real-timemonitoringofacetoneva-
por wassuccessfullyperformedusingacylindrical flow-cellwith
an enzymeimmobilizedmembrane.The fluorescence signalex-
hibited aclearrelationshipwithacetoneconcentrationfrom20to
5300ppb;thisencompassesacetoneconcentrationsintheex-
haled breathofbothhealthyanddiabeticindividuals.There-
sponse timetoreach95%ofthesteadystatewas35–70 s.Fur-
thermore, thedynamicrangeofthebio-sniffercouldrangefrom
7–10,000ppbby fine-tuning theNADHconcentration.Sincethe
bio-sniffer alsodetects2-butanoneand2-pentanone,itcould
potentiallybeusedasadiagnostictoolforlungcancerscreening.
When assessinglipidmetabolismbasedonexhaledbreath,in-
creased acetoneconcentrationduetoexercisewasobserved.We
anticipate futureuseoftheacetonebio-snifferasanon-invasive
analytical toolforassessmentoflipidmetabolisminexercise,
fasting anddiabetesmellitus.
