at least 5 different lineages were recovered. Of
these, 2 distinct lineages were found in the Mixteca region
and were well differentiated from P. punctatus. One of them
corresponded to P. oaxacae and the other one included a
clade named P. sp. nov. 1, which corresponded to populations
from Mixteca headwaters (with an elevation over 700 m)
and showed a high degree of molecular divergence from the
rest of species of the subgenus Profundulus (Nei’s distances
D = 0.165 − 0.845). In fact, based on the aforementioned analysis,
P. sp. nov. 1 was recovered as a sister clade to the rest
of species in the P. punctatus “group”, where P. oaxacae is
included
