Adoption of a standard research assessment of insomnia disorders will facilitate comparisons among different studies and advance the state of knowledge. These recommendations are not intended to be static but must be periodically revised to accommodate further developments and evidence in the field.
In summary, this is an interesting time for the study of insomnia. The full spectrum of translational research is available, from elaborating theoretical models of insomnia, to conducting theory driven hypothesis testing, to translating findings into clinical practice (and back). Understanding about the pathophysiology of insomnia is indeed being advanced by the postulating of integrative models that incorporate advances from cognitive and neurosciences. Moreover, there is a real possibility that such refinements in our understanding of insomnia may more closely approximate real world conditions under which insomnia develops and progresses, leading to individualized care.
