(a) Shrimp farming. Shrimp farms along the coastline speeded up
the erosion. Some shrimp farmers dug their shrimp ponds
between the road and the beach. If the seaward borders of the
ponds were destroyed, waves would invade inside the ponds
and destroy the roads (Fig. 3a). Local villagers saw the erosion
progress more than 50 m through the ponds in one day.
