Workflows describe interactions among employees by defining
paths, time and individuals involved in certain procedures. Once described,
the system can automatically manage the procedures, improving the quality
of collaboration. Workflows are predominantly effective in distributive
environments in which employees are frequently inaccessible or not
permanently located in the same physical workplace. In such cases, the
organization designs document exchange and collaboration between
individuals involved in the same process. For example, when an employee
completes work on a document, the system might be programmed to send
it to a list of supervisors, who would automatically be notified via e-mail, and
request a review.
