This contrasts with the previous and
widely held view that major influx of Himalayan detritus did not begin
until Neogene times, within the overlying Surma Group (Johnson and
Alam, 1991; Rahman and Faupl, 2003; and others). The source of the Barail
rocks has been contentious, with derivation proposed from either the
Indian craton (Uddin and Lundberg, 1998) or the Himalaya (Johnson and
Alam, 1991). The geochemical data presented here give the opportunity to
test these alternatives, and the proposal byNajman et al. (2008)of earlier
derivation of detritus from the Himalaya
