The move to ‘one species: one name’ has been widely
welcomed, especially by applied mycologists, despite
some initial misgivings, and the choice of generic names
where two compete has generally been proceeding by
harmonious consensus. This brings the naming of fungi
into step with that of other organisms, and will facilitate
clarity in legislation, for example that concerned with
food safety. It also removes a barrier to communication
and data retrieval in databases and amongst mycologists,
simplifies fungal recording and teaching, and enables
monophyletic clades revealed by molecular studies to
bear a single generic name.
