NURSES all around the world are celebrated today as International Nurses Day comes around.
With the theme ‘Nurses: A Force for Change – A vital resource for health’, the day is commemorated each year on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, a nurse who served during the Crimean War in the 1850s and has been the face of modern nursing ever since.
Parades, talks, tea parties and congresses are some of the many ways adopted worldwide to observe the day and the Sultanate is not short of activities to mark the day.
Mass thanksgiving prayers and tahlil was held last night at Al-Ameerah Mosque in Jerudong and a nursing workshop took place at the Health Promotion Centre earlier in the day.
The launch of the International Nurses Day will take place today at Dewan Al-Afiah, Ministry of Health, in the presence of the Health Minister Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof.
The minister will also launch a nursing career exhibition which will be open to members of the public starting 2pm at Dewan Al-Afiah. The exhibition will last till May 17.
To end the week of events, Nurses Family Sports Day will be held on May 18 at the Gadong Police Stadium.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, a retired nurse who has been in the industry for 34 years shared her vast experience and passion for the career.
Hjh Norhayatti Hj Mohd Yahya, 57, reminisced about the nursing cases she has done in the past and the adventurous journeys she embarked on to reach patients in rural areas of the country.
“Some places were so remote we had to take a helicopter or a boat to reach the patients, and often times we had to carry our equipment up and down hills.”
She said that nursing is in her blood as her mother, sister and even husband were once in the care giving industry and she treats her patients much like her family as well.
“When you treat patients nicely they sometimes let you into their personal lives and share their stories and problems, as nurses you will keep their secrets safe and help them as much as you can.”
Advising current and future nurses, Hjh Noorhayatti urged for them to be patient, kind and soft spoken when dealing with patients.
“Every task assigned should be carried out with sincerity.
“I loved my job and felt pride when donning my uniform, we (nurses) are not just healers, we also save lives.”
