In the city people are looking at what they can get from us. If we are able to teach them English or show them other things then we can speak into their lives. The people in the city are more materialistic but are more open to change. The village people are stuck with ancestor worship.
Many Muslims are leaving as refugees and only Christians are helping. This has opened a door to show them Jesus. Years ago only Catholics sent people out, Protestants didn’t.
In Germany a group of Maravians became missionary’s in the 1700’s and two boys sold themselves into slavery to enter an island that wouldn’t allow any outsiders in. A plantation owner was buying many slaves and that is how they got in. Around 100 years later the island was conquered and they found a healthy church on the island.
William Kerry went to do missions in India and wanted to end the practice of women being chained to her dead husband and burned together. The British government was passive and told him to leave it alone. When he went to do missions many said that God would change the unsaved if He wanted to and that missions was unnecessary. In the Hindu and Muslim religion many women marry men 30-40 years older. William Kerry thought this was terrible as young girls were being burned alive. The English government didn’t want to interfere. He would not stop pressing to have it removed so the government took away his passport and were going to send him back to Briton. He prayed and the Danish gave him a passport so he could stay in India. He then translated the Bible.
When Mr. Judson was 13 years old he was teaching the Bible at his father’s church in Hebrew and Greek, this intelligence made him very prideful. In Brown University he convinced his roommate to become an intellectual atheist, his name was Jacob Ames. He tried to be an actor but failed after a few years. One day when he was riding up to his home in Rhode Island he stopped at an inn and had to take a room next to a guy that was yelling and screaming and cussing God. He ended up being able to fall asleep, when he was up the next morning he heard it was quiet and asked if the man had calmed down. He found out the man had died. The man tells him that he was a university student and didn’t understand the issue. He was Jacob Ames, this caused Adonis Judson to write Death Hell multiple times and then promised God that he wanted to send people to heaven and would be a missionary. In the United States they had never sent out a missionary before so they wanted to see if he was missionary material. The man that he was supposed to meet showed up 4 hours late and asked if he was mad, the man wasn’t mad but was still calm so they sent him and supported him. In 1813 he went to Burma and had his first convert in 1819 and converted the entire Bible from Greek and Hebrew in 1839. When the English attacked Burma the king arrested all foreigners and treated them poorly. Only Adonis Judson and his wife could speak both English and Burmese language so they worked with the government to translate. Many of the Karen and Lisu people believed they lost the book but that a white man would come and bring the lost book and teach them Christianity.
Hudson Tylor was called to the inland China and brought the gospel to the people away from the coast. He trained up other missionaries and learned their language to reach them. They saw the gospel in the language. He adapted to the lifestyle of the Chinese and dressed like them and people though he was crazy.
There was then a movement to go into Africa knowing that they would probably never come back out, knowing they would die from disease or the Muslims. 100,000 students wanted to go but only 20,000 received enough funding and many of them died.
In Whales the bars were full and families were being broken up because of alcohol and anger. Prisons were full and the church was praying for revival. Evan Roberts prayed that God would break his country and start with me. The bars started to empty and people were repenting. Many of the young people were called into missions. Many of them went to Korea as they had no Christians.
In 1800, 99% were white, in 1900 90% were white skinned, now it is around 30%. They are coming and going to every nation as missionaries.
There are 16,439 people groups.
Around 2.1 billion still need to hear the gospel, 90% live in the 10/40 window.
To reach them we have to learn a new language, and to physically leave our home and country to reach them.
There was a couple that prayed to serve as missionaries and they got to serve Indians so they helped for 10 years at a reservation near them and saw nothing because they were untrusting of white people. They prayed again and were told they were not supposed to serve there but in South America. They then went to the mountains and the Indians received them openly and after 5 years had a Bible in their language. They then sent an Indian to the reservation and they were able to penetrate the tribe and bring Christianity to the tribe.
When Art and Ellen were called into missions they faced harsh criticism from Christians telling them there was people in America that needed God and that they had no business taking their children with them. They were told by the hospital that they would double Art’s salary. Ellen was offered a record contract before they began missions. He ended up just choosing one even though they had not felt they should when they prayed as there was only three weeks. At the office he was going to turn the forms in at, they get a call looking for a hospital administrator for the Anostosis. They needed a hospital administrator to get funding from the UN. Everything fit and this was God’s way to stop him from falling into a fear decision. He then talked it over with his family but wouldn’t pray as he wanted to do research. Art was unwilling to accept even though he had amazing things directing him to join YWAM. He then submitted to God’s plan and joined YWAM and did his DTS in Kona, HI. The UN ship deal fell apart and so he felt his family should go to Thailand. He never ended up working on the ship. His identity was in his occupation, he was a hospital administrator. Had God told him initially that he would go to Thailand villages without electricity, running water or nice toilets he would have thought it crazy and would have turned it down but that is what has given him fulfilment?
