According to the First Dietary National Survey prepared by the Ministry of Health and the Universidad de Chile, only 5,3 percent of Chileans have healthy eating habits.
86,9 percent of Chileans need to change their diet according to the results and 60 percent consume trans fats and salt in excess.
43,9 percent of the kids get the sugar from candies, and the average consumption of diary products is 330 ml, which is half of the recommended.
According to Undersecretary of Health, Jaime Burrows, some of the problems are getting a second breakfast at work: a sopaipilla or cookies as a morning snack are some of the mistakes that Chileans make.
Burrows explained to 24 horas TV show that some Chileans eat seven meals a day: the traditional four and three snacks.
Another factor is the socioeconomic background. People with less resources and education have access to low quality food and consume more energy and citric nutrients. “This shows in the obesity and hipertension levels,” explained Burrows.
“95 percent of Chileans need to change their dietary habits to avoid hypertension, diabetes, and other diseases” concluded Jaime Burrows
