Lesson SOC 11
Task: Share with others.
Prerequisites: AFF 11, SOC 9
Concept: Accomplishing this task can take a long time. Although the skill or concept can be fairly easily taught, the performance of the act of sharing may take considerable effort. Concepts of ownership and when it may be appropriate to share will need to be individualized based on the desires of the student and the family structure that the student is experiencing. Before beginning these activities, therefore, the teacher should assess the values that relate to the student and his or her culture and make every effort to respect them. For example, a new toy or an item of close personal value may not be an appropriate item to use when requesting sharing.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to share a specific item with another student, the student will give to the identified student that specific item to an 80% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Cookies or similar food items and objects known or perceived to be en-joyed by the student. Task Analysis:
1. In a group setting of at least three people, present to each student five of the food items that have been selected in the materials section. Encourage the students or assist them, as needed, in eating these items.
2. Modify Step 1 to asking each student to give the last food item he or she has to the person next to him or her in a way that ensures that each student gets another item but not one that was originally his or hers.
3. Continue Step 2, increasing the number of items passed by each student until all five items are passed before anyone eats.
4. Distribute a single toy or desired object to each student and perform the passing concept among the students.
5. Continue Step 4, using only one object for the whole group. Continue until the objective is met and observed in nontraining settings.
