To give another example: we all know at least the title of the text called
Saddharmapuṇḍarīka, and following Burnouf we have always translated this as “the lotus of the good law”. Once again this is not the only possibility. It could, for example, be “the good lotus of the law”, or “the lotus of the law of the good one”, or “ … of the good ones”. Since in fact we find that there is in the Dhammapada a verse talking about the good teaching the dhamma; to the good,36 we could very reasonably translate the title as “The lotus of the doctrine of the good one or of the good ones”, i.e. the Buddha or the Buddhas.
