There is a plethora of studies in the literature on how nurses and other health care professionals
can meet the needs of the patients and family members in an ICU during critical
illness. Findings from these studies vary but the aim is generally to be able to provide quality
care while also considering the existential needs of the patients and their families. A major
contribution of this study is the triangulation of data yielding common themes. Repetition
of themes from and across each category of participants was noted during coding and data
analyses that led to the common themes illuminated in the data..
