In the past, volunteers serve in a variety of capacities in the long-term care community to include socialization of the patients, administrative support, spiritual support, practical support, respite support, bereavement support and mental health support. (Falkowski, 2013) Furthermore, volunteers nurturing relationships with nursing home residents are sensitive to behavior changes that can be reported to staff and in some instances even lead to the recognition and treatment of depression (Claxton-Oldfield et al., 2009). Gross (1961) observed that volunteers participating in The Friendly Visitor Service of San Mateo County provided both for the socialization of the nursing home resident as well as providing staff support. Nowadays, volunteer work included educational volunteer, medical volunteer, sports volunteer, charity events participation (not fundraising) and community service volunteer.
