The Export Policy 1997 - 2002 emphasised wide expansion of
traditional/semi-intensive cultivation of shrimp (Ministry of
Commerce, 1997e2002). Such a target no doubt leads to
increased salinity, which is not allowed under the National Environment
Policy of 1992. Moreover, semi-intensively farmed prawns
have greater risk of antibiotic and pesticide contamination (The
SEAT project, 2009e2013)
