In 2003, other researchers
found that normal saline instillation disperses the
microorganisms to the lower respiratory tract as well.11
However, in all of the research conducted on this
topic, none of the researchers recommended the use of
instillation of saline in the endotracheal tube. There was
little or no benefit found with saline use. The researchers
strongly recommended that saline instillation should not
be used as a routine or standard clinical practice.
