Vishnu is the Hindu deity that is a protector and preserver God of the trinity, his vehicle is the Garuda who is powerful in his own right and uses his power only for good as a protector and rescuer. Garuda helps to dissolve negative energies and protects.
Lord Vishnu is portrayed as the sword carrying Rama having defeated Ravana and is carrying Sita with him. Garuda almost appears as Hanuman in his features not birdlike at all but definitely winged. Not quite sure how old this carving is but at least 50 years -it is a solid hardwood weighing in at 10 lbs. There is a missing wingtip on the left hand side and a hairline crack at the tail. The left hand wing was also repaired at the connection point to the main body. Garuda has lost a bit of his toe on his left side also. Really amazing condition overall, no major checks or cracks in the solid wood carving. The patina is great, has the look of incense and time – muted colors but abundant detail and decoration very complete composition. The base has a stylized flower and cloud swirls, typical of the mid century Balinese Temple Art. Please see all the photos for the composition and condition of this massive hardwood carving.
