McBride et al recently proposed a model to describe characteristics of effective teachable moments using smoking cessation as an example. Teachable moments were characterized as times that (1) increase perceptions of personal risk and outcome expectancies, (2) prompt strong affective or emotional responses, and (3) redefine self-concept or social roles. McBride et al posited that the greater the degree to which a health event alone or in combination with a proximally timed intervention influences all 3 domains, the greater the likelihood the event will prompt behavioral change.
