To be a true superpower, a nation must have command over the air, space, and sea. This command may also be termed as ‘command of the commons’ (Vogler, 2012). Currently, the United States holds the command of the global commons insofar as its military is able to regulate each frontier on a global level. The command of the commons has been one of the most significant contributory factors in the hegemonic defence strategy of the US. However, the gradual advancements in military technology by some other countries pose a threat to this hegemonic strategy. Some states have been able to develop military capabilities which limit the ability of the US to navigate the commons and hence to gather the essential intelligence required to maintain global military dominance. The question that is the main focus of this essay is, “do any states present a serious challenge to US command of the commons?” This essay discusses the threat posed by China to the US command of the commons and evaluates the threat on the basis of the currently prevailing literature on the topic. The essay first presents a brief background on the history and importance of American command of the commons. This is followed by a section evaluating the advancements made by China which may directly challenge the position of the US. Based on the analysis of the Chinese technological advancements, this essay determines whether China poses a real challenge to the US command of the commons and whether the US needs to reform its strategy to maintain its hegemonic position.
