ThepilotwasconductedduringthemonthsofSeptemberandOctoberof2009with30patients,ages18andover,attheGeneralInternalMedicineclinicatTempleUniversityHospital.TheclinicprimarilyserveslowincomeAfricanAmericanswhohaveMedicareorMedicaidinsurance,themajorityofwhomhavelowhealthliteracy.
Researchassistantsusedschedulingrecordstodetermineeligibility.Aconveniencesampleofvolunteerswasobtained.Patientswhorefusedtypicallycitedthattheycouldnotstayaftertheirvisitbecausetheydidnothavetime,hadtoleaveimmediatelytogotoworkortoanotherdoctor’sappointment,orwereaccompaniedbyacaretaker.Otherpatientsdeclinedbecausetheywerenotinterestedorwerefocusedsolelyontheirhealthissuesduringthevisit.
Tworesearchassistantsrecruitedpatientsandobtainedinformedconsentpriortoadministeringthehealthliteracyinstrument,theREALM-RortheS-TOFHLA,andsocio-demographicquestions.Thedirectionswerereadaloudbytheresearchassistantstothepatientswhowereaskedtoeitherpronounceasetofwordsorfillinthewordthatbestfieachsentence.Thedatawerecollectedpriortoorafterpatientshadbeenseenbytheresidentphysicians.Administrationofallresearchconsentformsandinstrumentstookfrom5-10minutes.Ofthe30patients,15wereadministeredtheREALM-Rand15wereadministeredtheS-TOFHLA.Researchassistantskepttrackofhowmuchtimeeachtesttookandscoredthetestsusingthestandardscoringrubrics.Eachsubjectreceiveda$10giftcardandtwoSEPTAtransittokensascompensation.
