Drinking water utilities face the challenge of providing potable water to their consumers despite many factors that can result in the degradation of water quality before it is delivered to the customers. In addition the largest investment by most water utilities is in their drinking water distribution system. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has promulgated and continues to develop drinking water standards which are intended to insure that the water delivered to consumers is safe to consume. Drinking water distribution systems play a key role in protecting public health but are also critical in supporting community development and safety.
