In some circles there was undiminished faith that the further development of science would open up humane possibilities. Advocates of modernization predicted that by the year 2000 birth rates would have been lowered, productivity of agriculture would have increased, problems to create new energy sources would have been overcome, air and water pollution would be under control,there would still be a sufficient supply of raw materials for industry and the developing countries would have doubled their income per capita (Rostow 1978: 580 – 581)
