At the end of 1995, the Hanhai Auction Company in Beijing sold the Northern Song handscroll Ten Odes by Zhang Xian (990-1078) to the Palace Museum for a large sum. In a short period of time, it generated quite a bit of interest. This piece is recorded in the List, but since then the original work had not been seen, its whereabouts unknown. Only recently has it resurfaced, which immediately sparked discussion in academic circles about its authenticity and about whether this was the very object in the collection of Zhou Mi (1232-1298). Along with questions regarding its dating, among others, the controversy and debate surrounding the authenticity of this work grew considerably larger, shedding further light on the mystery of this newly-discovered long-lost work from the List.
