However, given that video games are such a popular form of entertainment, and now
surpass television as the main leisure pursuit for some demographics (ELSPA 2003), we
would expect there to be huge numbers of people experiencing problems if video games
were inherently addictive. There are, again, some difficulties in ascertaining levels of
problems on these activities, as the media hype surrounding video games has led some
people to assume that video games are the cause of some behavioural problems (e.g.,
delinquent teenage behaviour). These figures are also compounded by the use of
inappropriate “addiction” screens or “addiction” criteria, as noted earlier, to classify people
as video game “addicts.”
