THE GOVERNMENT is planning to offer a debt moratorium to help teachers cope with debt problems.
The moratorium will likely last one to two years, said Kamjorn Tatiyakavee, permanent secretary of the Education Ministry.
He said Education Minister Admiral Narong Pipatanasai and Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Dhevakula have already agreed to the measure at a recent meeting.
He added that relevant agencies had also planned debt consolidations where possible and the development of the appropriate financial discipline among teachers.
"We, for example, will encourage teachers to do household accounting and be careful about their spending," Kamjorn said.
It is estimated that teachers have a combined debt of about Bt1trillion.
