As with Mary in the earlier exchange, when Kim was unable to respond correctly, Teri provided a cue in the form of another question, and then asked Kim for an expansion of her answer with an additional question. This is the essence of prompting.
Prompting and Classroom Climate. Consider the effects on students if a pattern of prompting is established. It communicates that the teacher expects a successful answer and will provide assistance to ensure success. As a result, on succeeding questions students are likely to increase their effort.
