Chapter 32: Love-2
Those simple sentences worked like a spell. I could finally let go of this matter in my heart.
Strangely, my inner-self began to calm down… I didn’t feel touched, or sad… instead, it was like a gentle warm ripple reverberating in my heart.
It took Papa a lot of courage to say these things out. But when he told me that, he did not hesitate at all. His gaze was confident and warm. I finally understood what Kamenashi meant by “the look of sheer determination” in his letters.
It was love.
Maybe it was different type of love, and it happened at a different time. But for both type of love, Papa was willing to use to his life to protect and watch over.
Tears flowed out from my eyes again, and my tensed-up nerves loosened up with these tears. The gentle rays from the sun shone on me as my tears flowed.
After removing the emotional baggage in me, I could smell the scent more clearly. I looked at Papa as he stared at the hospital in the faraway distance, lost in his own world. His hair rustled with the wind… and his gaze was fixed on that particular spot.
The very same place that gave him happiness in his youth. That room with Kame living in it.
Papa seemed to be able to guess my thoughts. He patted my hand gently and gave me a loving smile.
From his smile, I saw my own happiness, but I saw my tears too.
I thought about Papa, Mama, Pi… and him.
“Kazumi” Papa’s voice pulled me back to reality.
“Let’s go” He patted my shoulder. “Mama’s waiting for us”.
“Mama’s here as well?!”
Papa merely laughed my question off and gave me a bewildered look.
On our way back, Papa just walked ahead. I was the one who kept turning back to look at the hospice at the other of the sunflower fields.
As I walked further, the whitewashed walls got concealed among the sea of sunflowers gradually.
But I couldn’t forget the metal grilles in that room…
Every summer, Kame must have stayed by the windows to look at the sunflowers very often to reminisce about his brief but sweet, beautiful love. He must have reminisced about the times they spent together… those simple but romantic moments.
Just exactly like what Papa would do on the hilltop at the other end of the sunflower fields.
I chose to believe that during the times they were looking at sea of sunflowers from their respective positions, their gaze must have gently intersected somewhere in between…
