Land Diving Festival, Vanuatu
Land diving is a ritual performed in southern Pentecost Island, in the Southern Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. The festival is typically held on Saturdays during the dry season, from April to June.
Men on the island construct large wooden towers. They then climb to the top, while villagers below sing, dance, and make plenty of noise. The men then jump off of the towers without any safety equipment, save for vines wrapped around their ankles. The act is similar to bungee jumping, though much more dangerous. When the men land safely on the ground, the real celebration begins with joyous singing and dancing.
