When Salmonella
enters the vacuole, the presence of lysosomal
glycoproteins and removal of the surface marker assists
with changes to the vacuole (Finlay and Falkow, 1997).
The type III secretion system causes subsequent neutrophil
(heterophils in birds) and fluid accretion in the ileum
(Zhang et al., 2003). The neutrophil addition causes necrosis
of the surrounding tissue and ultimately diarrhea,
thereby bringing about the symptoms of disease (Zhang
et al., 2003).
