This model TAI system is investigated across a wide frequency band, which is the carrier frequency of the input pulse modulated signal shown in Fig. 2, 2.3–12 GHz. Thus, three types of standard waveguide, all mineral oil filled and working with the dominant mode TE10, are used to cover three different ranges of the entire frequency band of interest :a WR-187 waveguide for 2.3–4 GHz, a WR-112 waveguide for 4–7 GHz and a WR-62 waveguide for 7–12 GHz. The material of the matching layer used in this model setup is commercially available (ECCOSTOCK HiK, Emerson and Cuming) and its properties in the relevant frequency range are εr = 6 and tanδ = 0.002. But the matching layer thickness is different for models with different waveguides. It is 11.7-, 7-, and 4-mm thick for the WR-187, WR-112, and WR-62 waveguides, respectively. The main reason for choosing the 2.3–12 GHz frequency range lies in the fact that we have access to two high-power microwave pulse signal generators. One works from 2.5 to 4 GHz and the other works from 5 to 10 GHz. In fact, our model is general and should work for any chosen microwave frequency. However, different excitation antenna may be required for different frequency band. The thickness of the matching layer will also need to be redesigned which is straightforward.
