As an alternative, nutrient-removal/oxygenation systems have been constructed that employ attached filamentous algae in sloped, artificial streams. Mats composed of natural assemblages of filamentous algae and associated biota, or algal turfs that have been selected and cultivated specifically for this purpose, are subjected to flow-through of the effluent to be treated (Fig. 4-20).
