Rand assumed his position in a short ceremony in a hangar at D-M, received his third star, and began to acclimate himself not only to the command, but to the city itself. “We really like Tucson. We’ve spent a lot of time in Arizona, but mostly in the Phoenix area. I’m enjoying the five to 10 degrees of cooler temperatures here, we haven’t found a bad restaurant yet and we love the people. My grandchildren visited us and drove to the top of Mount Lemmon, which was fun for all of us.”
When he has free time, he likes to spend it with his wife, seeking out new restaurants. He is an avid reader — especially of history — and seriously devoted to fitness, working out nearly every day. He also has taken up golf, though he admits with a smile, “The good news is my game has a lot of room for improvement. I like the fellowship and being outdoors. I made a commitment when I took up golf around 48 years old that if I play 18 holes and I’m more stressed than I started, it’s not worth doing. I refuse to be stressed out about it.”
He is very grateful for the support that he and his family have received from the community, and the way that the base and the Airmen have been embraced by Tucson over the years. As an example, he points to the D-M 50, a civic group that raises money to improve the quality of life for airmen and their families.
“I raised my hand 38 years ago right out of high school to join the Air Force,” he concludes. “But the pertinent question is not, ‘Why did I join?’ but, ‘Why do I stay?’ I believe in the mission that we perform. I passionately believe in the airmen who perform that mission, and in the families who support them. It’s a noble calling to be able to serve our country. It’s not about me, it’s about those young men and women who are out there every day around the world — ordinary people who do extraordinary things. I don’t know where we get them from, but thank God we have them.” -— Scott Barker - See more at: http://www.tucsonlifestyle.com/magazine/commanding-presence/#sthash.kNBnJz0d.dpuf
