To do this, we modified the STL
(STereoLithography)
file format,
which is in CAD software to design
3D systems. STL is also known
as the Standard Tessellation Language
and is supported by many
other software packages. STL files
describe a 3D object’s surface geometry,
without any representation
of color, texture, or other common
CAD model attributes.
To make the STL file easier to
use in a medical environment, we
added patient information such as
age, gender, disease name, and other
relevant significant data to it. Along
with the additional medical information,
the file keeps the original STL
format structure and can be opened
and used in existing software, which
is useful for medical imaging equipment
manufacturers, medical 3D
signal-processing engine developers,
3D volumetric imaging software
