Giving a speech is an effective way to tell one’s side of a story. Incorporating different types of writing in the speech allows the presenter to convincingly make his point. Throughout his well known speech, “An Indian’s View of Indian Affairs,” Chief Joseph uses several techniques to convey his thoughts to his audience and to effectively tell white people what kind of people the Nez Perces are. Chief Joseph’s speech includes techniques of persuasion, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and appeal to emotion, all wrapped up in a personal narrative, with the events told in chronological order.
