WE SAY: We were very intrigued with the claim that ZigTech shoes would "reduce wear and tear in key leg muscles by up to 20% " and allow us "to train harder for longer". Especially since the shoes look rather gimmicky, and frankly, so do the explanations behind the concept of this zig-zag-shaped sole. Transmission of wave energy acroos the shoe? Er...we're not convinced that it does this just because the sole is shaped like a wave. But since we don't have a lab full of mad scientists to prove the theory, we took the shoes out for long test runs.

The first surprising thing about the shoes is that they feel like normal running shoes, as much as you'd half expect them to feel like some sort of alien spaceboots. During the runs, there wasn't any kind of exaggerated bounce that we half expected from the way the shoes look. Eventually, we did forget all about the funky shoe design and claims, and got down to some serious running. The ZigFuel felt comfortable, and much lighter than expected. While we cannot possibly back up the claims of wave energy transference, the zig-zag sole does seem to provide energy return and bounce in an indiscernible that way we've never quite felt before, and not in a bad way (...just a little strange).

As for the claims of reducing wear and tear, it would only be fair for us to comment on this after greater prolonged testing. However, it has to be said that the ZigFuel felt great for one of our weartesters even after a first-time use on a 10k run at moderate pace . He reported none of the usual wearing-in discomforts that one might face from putting a new shoe through that distance and pace.

Recommended for neutral to overpronators as a solid everyday trainer across most distances, and for runners with existing injuries.

Comfort: 9/10 — The technical performance mesh upper provides breathability and ventilation that we can't complain about. Spacious toe room should please runners with wider feet.

Stability: 9/10 — With the ridges of the zig-zig outsole running horizontally across the shoe, the ZigFuel is expectedly stable. Impact on the heel feels softer than normal.

Performance: 8/10 — Much better than expected. So confident are Reebok in these shoes that they even extended a 30-day satisfaction guarantee when they were launched.

Looks: 9/10 — OK, so this depends on what you look for in the design of your running shoe. The new Reebok ZigTech shoes look even more unorthodox than the brand's Pump series from back in the day, and is sure to capture the stares from passers-by and fellow runners. If you like the flashiness, then you'll love this; but if you don't, you probably wouldn't even try a pair on at the stores. The ZigFuel also has 3M reflective features for safety.
