a shortcoming of Pdsa cycles is that they
are primarily review and audit cycles and lack
specifics about how to manage the change in
terms of staff management. Therefore, Pdsa
cycles should be used in conjunction with the
adKar (awareness, desire, Knowledge, ability
and reinforcement) change management model
(hiatt 2006). The adKar model suggests that
for change to be implemented successfully there
needs to be an awareness of the need to change,
a desire to support and participate in the change,
knowledge of how to change, ability to implement
the change and reinforcement to sustain the
change (hiatt 2006). as a change management
model for the handover form, adKar would
be simple to implement and would focus on the
need to engage and motivate nurses to participate
in the change, which is essential considering the
ritualistic nature of handover practices and the
difficulties associated with overcoming barriers to
change
