Three people and a dog were rescued after their boat was damaged and began to sink early Saturday morning, Coast Guard officials told WVEC-TV.
According to the Coast Guard, the 60-foot fishing boat ran aground near Wachapreague Inlet, and although they were able to free the boat, it sustained major damage in the incident. A Coast Guard boat searched for three and a half hours and were finally able to locate the boat, but Hermine's heavy surf forced them to rescue the boaters and their pet by helicopter, the report added.
"Complicated heavy weather events like Post Tropical Storm Hermine require difficult decisions, and in this case, the captain and crew decided to abandon the vessel, possibly saving their lives," Capt. Rick Wester, Commander, Sector Hampton Roads, told WVEC-TV. "We're very glad we were able to return them to safety and that they are doing well."
