2.3.3. Antibiotic susceptibility
Antibiotic sensitivity was determined for bacterial cultures:
Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, E. coli ATCC 25922,
S. aureus ATCC 25923, and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC
29212. Antibiotic sensitivity was tested according to Clinical
and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines for disk
diffusion assays, except that vegetable-based media was used in
place of Mueller-Hinton agar. BD/BBL™ Sensi-discs impregnated
with antibiotics from major classes including: lactams
(amoxicillin/clavulanic acid-20/10 mg; ampicillin-10 mg),
macrolides (erythromycin-15 mg, azithromycin-15 mg), tetracyclines
(tetracycline-30 mg, doxycycline-30 mg), aminoglycosides
(kanamycin-10 mg, tobramycin-10 mg), quinolines
(oflaxocin-5 mg, norfloxacin-10 mg), and the combination
antibiotics sulfamethoxazole-trimehoprim (23.75/1.25 mg). Additional
susceptibility testing was performed using the Vitek® 2
Compact following the manufacturer's protocols for antimicrobial
susceptibility testing with the exception that the bacteria
were grown on different vegetable media types instead of the
recommended TSA with blood medium.
