In the present study, in vitro antioxidant and free radical scavenging capacity of methanol
extract from Maranta arundinacea rhizome were evaluated using established in vitro
models such as DPPH, hydroxyl radical, superoxide radical, ABTS radical cation and
reducing power. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were estimated. Methanol extract
showed considerable in vitro antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities in a dose
dependent manner when compared to the standard antioxidant (ascorbic acid/trolox).
Thus, this study suggests that Maranta arundinacea rhizome can be as a potent source of
natural antioxidant
