Among the most important societal issues relating to the Internet are censorship and privacy. Web content is not censored as a whole, but Internet filtering can be used by parents, employers, educators, and anyone wishing to prevent access to sites they deem objectionable on computers for which they have control. Privacy is a big concern for individuals, particularly as it relates to web activities. Cookies are typically used by Web sites to save customized settings for that site and can also be used for advertising purposes. Another item of possible concern is spyware (software installed without the user’s permission that sends information to others). Unless an e-mail message is encrypted, it should not be assumed to be completely private.
