Born in Finland and now living within the picturesque region of Yorkshire in the UK, I specialise in fine-art, pinhole and landscape photography. I also have an interest in portrait and wedding photography.
I have had a keen interest in art throughout my life. During my school years I practiced drawing and oil painting and completed my Master of Arts degree in Interactive Multimedia.
During the early 1990’s I borrowed my brother’s 35mm SLR and really started to experiment with photography for the first time and realised that this form of art work was my passion. I soon bought my own SLR camera which I carried everywhere, taking pictures of anything and everything to develop my skills.
I moved to the UK in 2000 and fell in love with the rolling countryside. This inspired me to concentrate on landscape photography, to try to capture the essence of the British Isles and the history that has shaped this landscape.
I moved to digital photography a few years ago. Digital cameras have allowed me to experiment with many different subjects and photographic styles. However I still believe that the equipment is not what makes the picture, it is the photographers themselves. It’s important to think about what you want to take the picture of in the first place and get the composition right in the camera rather than fixing things on the computer, but to get the result required I am an advocate for enhancing pictures using computer software to get the picture you envisioned.
Just as Ansel Adams said: “You don’t take a photograph, you make it”, to me, recording the subject on film or on the digital sensor is only part of the process, the post-processing and printing of the photograph all combine together to produce a piece of art. To me, photography is art and it’s the end result that matters, not how you got there.
With pinhole photography, I love the way the pinhole camera records the scene in a dreamy, almost ghostly manner. The longer exposure times required, blur any movement and you can really see time passing by. This is a refreshing balance to digital photography as it requires so much more planning, thinking how to take the photograph and of course waiting. As all my pinhole cameras so far have been film based, to avoid wasting too much film, the photographs must be properly planned before hand, the camera aimed carefully and exposure time calculated. All this slows you down, but I don’t believe that this is a bad thing; this makes you think before taking the photo, what you are taking it of and why. I believe this makes me a better photographer, whether using film or digital.
To me, photography is all about beautiful light and how the light shapes the subject; whether it’s the rolling hills of a landscape or a face in a portrait. It’s the textures and shapes which are revealed by the light or hidden in the shadows that makes the picture and I also love the way that the light provides the atmosphere in black and white pictures, which is often my preferred choice.
I hope that my enthusiasm for creating art through photography comes across through the pictures on this website. I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have, please feel free to contact me.
