The history of Hoshi Ryokan was dated back in 717 A.D. Raicho Daishi,a founder of Hoshi Ryokan and one of the greatest Buddhism teachers of Japan, hiked to the top of mount Hakusan to perform his Buddhism practices. When he took a rest one night and fell asleep, the spirit of the mountain appeared in his dream and told him that there was an underground hot spring in awazu village situated 20-24 kilometers from the base of the mountain. As it spellbound by the sacred spirit,he went down the mountain to awazu village and discovered the hot spring with the help of the villagers.
The hot spring was believed to cure any illness because it was uncovered by the spirit of the mountain. Taicho suggested sick people to use the water from the hot spring to bath their bodies. Using the magic water as a cure, good health was brought back to the I'll people. Rumors of the supernatural power of hot spring at Awazu village spread out all over Japan and a lot more people came here wishing their sicknesses could be healed.with his disciple,Garyo hoshi, then built a spa and a hotel at the heart of hot spring of Awazu.
Forty-six generations of the Hoshi family have been running Hoshi Ryokan for almost 1,300 years. Hoshi Ryokan becomes the oldest hotel in the world and it is still operated by the same Hoshi family today.
The hotel has expanded and developed throughout the centuries. It now houses 100 guests rooms with 2 indoor and 2 outdoor hot spring spas.
