Writing is a very complex process that incorporates both cognitive thinking and metacognitive skills. Students in Ms. Perla’s class start with brainstorming, planning, and drafting. Using a metacognitive wrapper, they evaluate the difficulty they had with each step by ranking each step on a scale from easy to hard. Figure 5.12 is an example.
As Ms. Perla reviews this reflection along with the students’ writing, she can see where they are most challenged in the process. She asks students to summarize and synthesis their conclusions also, and together they decide on appropriate interventions and next steps.
