Collagen and in vitro collagen contents of the drinks and
bioavailability results are given in Table 6.
The present study demonstrates that the in vitro
bioavailability of hydrolyzed collagen is very high. A 2.5 mg/
100 mL hydrolyzed collagen addition to the drinks increased
the collagen content to 2.05–2.27. It is also known from in vivo
metabolism that more than 90% of the hydrolysates are digested
and quickly absorbed after oral ingestion (Asghar &
Henrickson, 1982; Oesser et al., 1999) where the in vivo
bioavailability studies in humans are important to confirm the
in vitro findings. In addition, chronic intake of hydrolyzed collagen
affects platelet adhesion and aggregation which should
be tested by clinical studies (Roberts, McNicol, & Bose, 2004
