Psychosocial professionals often engage the patient by using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques to help relieve the patient’s negative feelings. The National Alliance on Mental Illness describes CBT as a technique based on the theoretical concept that behaviors and feelings are formed by our thoughts and that we can learn new ways of thinking.CBT is a proven theory that has shown to be a somewhat more superior treatment than antidepressants in adults with depression. Consequently the psychosocial professional will help patients and their families recognize, challenge, test, and change negative thoughts and unrealistic beliefs into positive, realistic ones.
