Land conflicts can be prevented if all relevant stakeholders are involved in a joint land use planning. In the case of existing conflicts, discussions about current and future land uses and the joint definition of land use rules can help to reduce or even stop land use conflicts. This can be done through the preparation of land use maps and plans as well as by local agreements, both consisting of or being accompanied by land use regula-tions. The latter are very popular in Sub-Saharan Africa where they are frequently used to solve conflicts among farmers and pastoralists as well as among local and foreign users of common resources.
